Playing team sports, especially intramural sports, is one way to improve social skills. Participating in intramural sports has a few social advantages. Because playing intramural sports involves interacting with people from different teams, and in some cases, different locations, players have the chance to meet and engage people from other teams. Not only do players get to meet new people, playing the game itself forces team members to cooperate and negotiate, which are valuable people skills that can be used later in life.
Research also supports the fact that intramural sports can assist young adults with becoming more socially adept. One study focused on college-age women at Iranian universities. The study reported that women who participated in intramural sports were not only more confident, but they also related better socially with other team members. The study also found that the women who participated in the study were more tolerant of different cultures, which is a good trait to have when meeting people from different backgrounds.
